The "Peking" is a four-masted barque built in Hamburg in 1911 for the Chile nitrate trade (= fertilizers for munitions) and providing sail training for naval cadets. In the 1930's she became the Shaftesbury Homes training ship "Arethusa" moored on the Medway and in the 1960's was bought by the South Street Seaport Museum and kept near the bottom of Wall Street, New York.
In the 1970s I made many business visits to New York and regularly went on board the "Peking", taking many detailed photos for my paintings. In the 2020's "Peking" was bought by Hamburg City for their Maritime Museum and I visited her during restoration which is due for completion next year.
I completed six large paintings of "Peking" and this one shows her in the Atlantic, sailing past the mouth of the Amazon with SS Hillary (Booth Line up the Amazon) in the background.
